UNESCO has recorded (on 4 January 2010) a World Heritage nomination by the Australian Government to extend the Fraser Island World Heritage Area to include the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park, the Breaksea Spit to the north of Fraser Island, Platypus Bay, the Great Sandy Strait/Tin Can Bay Ramsar Area and the Wide Bay Military Reserve.

See the following link Unesco Great Sandy World Heritage Area for further details of the nomination.

The application notes that the site is particularly important for migratory wading birds - among the 350 species of birds that inhabit or visit the area.
